Germany’s first supermarket made of wooden building blocks
- EDEKA realises first retail project with TRIQBRIQ
- Over 11,000 wooden building blocks made from industrial wood, calamity wood and waste wood installed
- CO₂ savings thanks to recyclable solid wood system
- Architecture that takes deconstruction and conversion into account
- Focus on regional products
With the new EDEKA Popko at Neudammstraße 111 in Braunschweig-Lamme, a real lighthouse project for circular construction was opened on 8 May: For the first time, a supermarket was built entirely with the TRIQBRIQ timber construction system. The 1,100 square metre store sets new standards in resource-saving construction.

Innovative design saves 50 % CO₂
The load-bearing wall construction consists of around 11,000 micro-modular wooden building blocks – known as BRIQs – which are made from industrial and calamity wood as well as reclaimed wood. This innovation allows wood to be used that would otherwise have been quickly burnt – this conserves resources and is good for the environment. The BRIQs are stacked dry on the building site and connected with beech wood dowels – completely without adhesives or other artificial fasteners. This means that the building can be completely dismantled and offers maximum flexibility for future conversions. Thanks to the innovative structural concept, it was also possible to realise smaller foundations and significantly reduce CO₂-intensive concrete. As a result, the new building saves around 50% of emissions compared to conventional construction methods.
"This store shows how modern retail architecture and genuine sustainability can go together. Circular construction means that what is a market today can be something completely new tomorrow - without any demolition or waste."

Focus on fresh and regional food
Independent retailer Andreas Popko and his 42-strong store team are now providing local supplies in the “New Centre Lamme” with the newly built full-range supermarket in an innovative timber construction. In the first supermarket made of wooden building blocks, customers will find an extensive range of goods with 15,000 items: It ranges from GUT&GÜNSTIG products at discount prices and the new EDEKA centrepieces to well-known branded items and a large selection of regional organic products. The focus throughout the store is on freshness in EDEKA quality.
“With our service counters, a wide range of regional products, the Café Lammer Busch and a great deal of passion for what we do, we offer our Lammer neighbourhood both a place to shop and a meeting place to exchange ideas,” says Andreas Popko, who has been an independent EDEKA retailer for over ten years.
