How it works & structure

TRIQBRIQ is a circular timber construction system developed in response to the climate crisis and the high CO2 emissions of the construction industry.

The micro-modular timber building blocks (BRIQs) are stacked on top of each other on the construction site in a bonded pattern and locked together using beech wood dowels. Our patented timber construction system completely avoids the use of artificial fasteners.

Wall openings can already be planned within the TRIQBRIQ grid or created individually in various sizes. Cable ducts can simply be sawn out. The system is therefore extremely flexible and can be adapted to your individual requirements.

Our BRIQs are available in various sizes and can be used for different purposes such as door/window lintels and filling in masonry.

We currently offer two wall systems:

  • The TRIQBRIQ WS25 with a wall thickness of 25 cm
  • The TRIQBRIQ WS15 with a wall thickness of 15 cm

Each wall system includes BRIQs in different lengths.

Deconstructing the TRIQBRIQ system is straightforward and only requires removing the wooden dowels used to lock the system together. TRIQBRIQ has developed a special tool for this process, which is mounted on a conventional hammer drill. With this tool, the wooden dowels can be removed from the system quickly and efficiently.

As an alternative to the drill, a hammer and a type of chisel can also be used to loosen the wooden dowels.

Once the wooden dowels have been removed, the individual BRIQs can be easily separated from one another and the system dismantled. Thanks to this simple deconstruction feature, the TRIQBRIQ system is very flexible and can be easily converted or dismantled at any time.

TRIQBRIQ enables fast and efficient construction. The prefabricated BRIQs can be assembled easily and precisely, resulting in a shorter construction time.

Yes! TRIQBRIQ supports the BIM process by providing precise digital information about its building elements. This information can be integrated into the BIM model to enable an accurate representation of the building. This allows architects, engineers, and other professionals to plan, analyze, and optimize the building virtually.

You can find TRIQBRIQ directly on the BIMobject platform.

TRIQBRIQ’s BIM compatibility includes, among other things, the provision of 3D models of the building elements, information on material properties, dimensions, construction details, and other relevant data. This information can be imported into BIM software to digitally visualize the building, detect clashes, optimize costs, and make the entire construction process more efficient.

TRIQBRIQ has received general building authority approval and general type approval.

The system was tested at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for load-bearing capacity and rigidity, and even exceeded the calculated values.

Wood naturally burns, but solid wood burns safely and predictably: approx. 0.6–0.8 mm per minute. The solid timber construction of a TRIQBRIQ house therefore burns slowly and at a defined charring rate. This allows the residual load-bearing capacity of the material to be calculated during a fire event.

A layer of charcoal forms on the surface of the wood, which protects the core and has a heat-insulating effect. This means the core remains load-bearing for a long time. A structural collapse, as can happen with reinforced concrete due to the melting of steel beams, is very unlikely with solid timber construction.

Thanks to the solid timber construction, we achieve a fire resistance class of REI45 or REI60.

TRIQBRIQ also produces less toxic smoke in the event of a fire, which could endanger residents. This means TRIQBRIQ naturally offers a high level of fire protection.

Due to its timber construction, the TRIQBRIQ system naturally has excellent thermal insulation and already insulates ten times better than concrete. This means that fewer additional insulation materials are needed to meet thermal protection requirements.

With our WS25, approximately 75 mm of wood fiber insulation is needed to achieve a U-value of 0.24 W/(m2K), which meets energy efficiency standards. This does not yet take into account additional layers, which would also have a positive effect on the U-value.

Yes. TRIQBRIQ naturally has a wood moisture content of ≤ 20%. No additional moisture is introduced during the assembly of the exterior walls. The vapor-permeable construction method allows the interior to dry quickly and ensures a comfortable indoor climate within dry exterior walls.

Yes. Thanks to the thick solid timber walls, TRIQBRIQ offers natural protection against electromagnetic radiation and shields up to 99.9% of high-frequency radiation from mobile phone masts.

Multi-story buildings are realized by screwing the BRIQs to the timber ceiling or with brackets. Various ceiling types are possible to ensure sound insulation.

Different variants are possible:
1. The BRIQ can be placed directly on the floor slab in a mortar bed. A damp-proof course must be laid directly underneath the BRIQ.

2. The BRIQs are mounted on a leveling sill.

3. The BRIQ is erected on a reinforced concrete plinth.

In order to lay a ceiling or form a roof structure, the tenons of the wall-closing BRIQ row must be removed. This is done by sawing off the tenons on site.

Electrical cables can be easily installed by routing a cable slot with a wood router. Water pipes or heating pipes are fixed to the wall in the conventional way and are concealed behind facing shells in the wall.

Yes, it is possible to use the BRIQs in renovation projects as well. Since TRIQBRIQ is a technology-open system, extensions and additions can also be easily implemented with our timber building blocks.

No. The BRIQs are technically dried in such a way that there is no longer any breeding ground for pests.

Sustainability & healthy living

Sustainability starts in the forest. Wood stores CO2 – both in the forest and once it has been used in construction. When wood is felled and processed, the carbon bound within it remains stored for decades or even centuries.

TRIQBRIQ solid timber construction stores approximately 177 kg of CO2 per square meter of wall area long-term with the WS25.

For our BRIQs, we can also use industrial, calamity, and reclaimed construction timber – wood that often has no meaningful use beyond burning in conventional construction. This allows us to intervene in the carbon cycle, preserve the wood, and prevent unnecessary CO2 emissions.

According to the German Federal Association for Prefabricated Construction, enough wood grows in Germany in just 23 seconds for a prefabricated single-family home. Wood is therefore one of the few renewable raw materials that bind climate-damaging carbon dioxide throughout their entire growth phase, giving it a very good climate footprint.

With TRIQBRIQ, we turn our built environment into a circular CO2 sink.

For our BRIQs, we use untreated softwood from regional forests. What makes this special is that we can process industrial and calamity timber for the building blocks, such as small-diameter wood, storm-damaged wood, beetle-infested wood, and heartwood. Reclaimed construction timber is also used in our BRIQs.

The Federal Research Centre for Forests (BFW) recommends processing damaged timber promptly and removing it from the forest to counteract further bark beetle proliferation. By using TRIQBRIQ, you also help regional forests maintain a healthy future.

We produce our timber building blocks at our own main plant in Tübingen. We rely on regional timber sourcing to optimize transport routes and save CO2.

Our machines run on electricity. This is provided CO2-neutrally through our own photovoltaic systems. We further use the sawdust produced during production to heat our buildings. Timber sourcing and production are thus environmentally friendly, and embodied energy is reduced to a minimum.

Our BRIQs are delivered completely waste-free on pallets. The protective covers and tension straps used are reusable and are returned by our logistics partners along with the pallets

The timber building blocks are connected using wooden dowels and therefore require no glued joints at all. This means the TRIQBRIQ blocks can be dismantled by material type and reused, enabling long-term CO2 storage.

TRIQBRIQ ensures a healthy indoor climate because it is breathable, sustainable, and durable. TRIQBRIQ’s vapor-permeable construction method regulates humidity naturally and emits practically no air pollutants.

Yes, TRIQBRIQ contains no allergenic or harmful substances. Timber construction has even been shown to be beneficial for the health of people with allergies and asthma.

Wood is vapor-permeable, meaning it can absorb and release moisture. This regulates humidity to 45–55%, which has a calming effect on the respiratory tract.
